Question for you fly swatters to stimulate some discussion....
Looked at some high end new Xi3 Sage Fly rods ( $700.00) this weekend (they are sweet, but spending big $$$, whew!!!) ... instead of taking the big $$$ dive on a new rod, I decided and purchased some good quality 9wt Rio fly line ($75.00)... What a HUGE difference this made on the casting on my St. Croix fly rod 8wt... I got to thinking... with all this new technology coming out to the fly fishing industry at warp speed, is it more the improved fly line technology that impacts the balance and castabilty or is it the newer Fly rod technolgy? I had previously used mid $$ range Cortland and Scientific Angler fly line and it casted okay, I usually overline with 9wt, but it wasn't smooth as some of my other fly rods... All rods have a certain level of backbone (law of Physics) that will load the line and cast it, but is the fly line weight and quality that must be matched to the type of fly rod you cast? I have previously casted 2 identical same length mid flex & full flex, 7wt Orvis fly rods with the same wt fly line and get different casting ability with them.... One cast like a dog , the other casted pretty good....Thoughts??? ... I've seen Lefty Kreh make some great casts during his demonstrations, but told he over-line some times 2-3 weight fly line weight with certain rods??? So, is it the rod or the line that makes the difference??? The days of the old Wonderod and simple Cortland 333 line are long gone with all the new products at teh fly shows out there now....Can I use a average fly rod with high end quality line and cast well? or a high end fly rod with average fly line and cast equally okay also?....
??? How do I get more bang for my buck or or as my wife states..."Your
Cheap! you want more toys for your money..." she's right...
