Helped B52 and friends raise money for Josephine Trout Pond at Longfellow's Wayside Inn. Theme was Classic flies from 1850-1950... I took a stab of trying to copy Master Alec's beautiful fly tying work...tried the Matador and Polka...these are hard but I learned a lot from Alec a while back...

John you did a great job on those flies - that Matador is SUPERB. Those wood duck wings can be a pain.
Although I enjoy tying the classics what I really enjoy is tying my own patterns in the classic style. Here is on of my favorites - I have had good luck with largemouths with this fly - and remember - fish 'em on a sinking line! Alec ![]() WYANOKE |

Yesterday was the fourth Annual Fly Tying event at Wayside Inn, Sudbury, MA. Originally I was having Alec and John tie at this event. Alec let me know he couldn't make the event this year. John was going to tie some bugs. He told me later he would try to do some of Alec's ties.
John not only came through with his ties but also saved the day with projector screens etc. I can only say, after I'm long gone the spirit of the Bass pond will last for ever with the likes of Alec and John. People who fish for Atlantic Salmon rave about the beautiful salmon flies. These classic bass flies are nothing to be ashamed of. Alec and John - your assignment is to keep tying the rest of your life. John, thanks for bailing me out. Great classic works. |

Great looking flies! I really want to get into tying classic style flies. It's art and function tied on a hook. Any resources I can utilize to begin this adventure? Hopefully I can aquire the talent to make some of those beauties.

Classic Fly Pattern thread. Alec and John, if you ever fish for Atlantic Salmon - these patterns would definetly work on salmon and the people who fish for salmon. Amen

NIce John, Is that wood duck for the hackle ? What size hooks are you using? The hackle is teal I believe and using # 1 & #2 hooks ... I took salt water hooks and spray painted them with Rust-oleum flat black... Salmon hooks are REAL expensive, this is a good substitute for old time flies. I did got a bunch of Jungle cock and lots of other great exotic type feathers in the new material. I've watched Alec in awe tie several times over the years, followed his lead and took some patterns from www.classicflytying.com. this style of classic bass patterns (early 1900's) was very popular and caught bass.... I watched Alec catch several Nice fish on some of his classic patterns...They work... but they are too pretty to fish... Check out Mary Orvis Marbury and Globalflyfisher.com and http://www.favoriteflies.net/mikes_site/marbury/gallery.htm also The problem is these flies can be expensive to make, but a dang lot of fun
