I would like to get a little more serious about pursuing bass, and would probably use a 7wt fiberglass rod for the majority of this fishing. I also have other glass and graphite in 5wt, 6wt and 8wt that might be used as well.
Anyway, for bass fishing with the 7wt Fenwick in various conditions (tossing some good sized bugs with quick casts for fairly short distance, but also making lots of medium to longer casts with medium sized bugs), what is your favorite line? I've thought about a less expensive Bass Taper, like a Cortland Pro or Rio MainStream, but have heard that while the Bass Tapers are great for turning over big bugs at fairly close range, that they are not very good at the longer casts at all. Am I better off with a standard DT or WF line for all around bass fishing? I know that this depends upon whether a person fishes mostly big, air resistant bugs....but I'm talking about just a good all-around bass line.
I just picked up a Rio MainStream DT7F standard taper on the cheap (I guess it would be labeled Trout on the latest versions of the line) and plan to try it out. I've heard that the Rio MainStream and SA Headstart lines have a shorter more agressive front taper than a standard line anyway, so I'm hoping that perhaps the MainStream line I just picked up will be a good all-around type line for decent sized bugs on the 7wt.
For you folks that toss a lot of bass and panfish bugs with a fly rod, do you prefer a WF or DT line if you're not using a full blown Bass Taper? Thanks in advance for any insights and expertise on this!
