I discovered Jack Gartsides Sparrow fly thru a swap on the Fiberglass Flyrodders. Well last fall I was fishing for trout in Flax pond on Cape Cod and wasn't having much success. Looking thru my inventory of flies in the fly box I came across a nice buggy looking fly and decided to give it a go. I was more than pleasantly surprised when I started getting immediate results landing a number of rainbows and getting regular hits. I was devasted when at dusk a large fish nailed the fly hard and parted my leader.
How was I to determine what fly I had so I could stock up on more? Luckily the person who headed up the swap had a record of the particpants and submitted flies. I was thrilled. So I found great instructions online which I think you can find a nice pod cast on www.flyfishohio.com and tied up a whole bunch in two different sizes and two different colors (natural and olive).
Well I have been using them in warmwater lately and you can see I took a very nice 4+lb largemouth with a larger sized Sparrow if you look in the reports above. I also want to note that I have had very good results with Crappie too. They love this fly. If you like to target Crappie I highly recommend you try one.
Now that the warmwater is slowing down I am back in the coldwater mode and have had success again with them for rainbows in the local stocked ponds.
So if you haven't tried one...you should. If you don't tie you can purchase them direct from originator at www.jackgartside.com
