I doubt I'll be claiming that tasty prize. Although the ice went out fairly early up here (late March), we've had little in the way of warm weather
since. Mostly low 40s and wind or drizzle... hardly the stuff to get Mr. Bass moving into the early season shallows.
In fact, I haven't even bothered to buy my license yet. Last year things warmed up pretty quick in April, but that's not the case in 2009. Mike |

No global warming here. As I look at the calendar. I remember going with my dad checking out ponds around East Taunton, MA. Third week in March I would see
bass scouting the shallows. Now it's just wind, more wind, more wind with gloomy days.

Well tonight it all came together for me with only one thing missing.....the camera. Gillbuster knows where I was. Fished a fine little kettle pond near my house for the first time. I fished the Northeastern shore line which had the wind blowing onshore and good sun exposure. I methodically worked my way along the wind blown shore casting and looking for any signs of life besides the turtles that were following me eating what ever I stirred up until about 30 yards down the shoreline the line finally goes tight. No great big hit. The line just kind of stopped and went tight. The old Orvis Full Flex glass finally had its first pull of the season and was fast to a fine 14 inch largemouth. After taking a moment to admire this hopfully first of many 2009 bass I gently slide him back into the crystal clear water and sent him on his way. I then proceeded to work the brand new Magnum Shark skin line out thru the guides once again. Zippp....Zippp.......Zippppppp sending the goldie sailing off to the scene of the first hookup. I am happy to report I immediately caught my second largemouth bass from the exact same spot and that fine bass looked like a twin brother of the first. And so it went like this for a short while. One bass after another falling for the sultry wag of the goldie's mylar tail. There was a short break in the action where a couple casts without a hit and I am thinking...uh oh... there on to me . So as I am thinking that maybe I will have to switch up flies my focus is
off my casting and I donate my first fly of the season to the fly fish gods. Somewhere enshrined in some brush along the windward shore line is my goldie right
now dangling in the breeze....
So I tried an olive wooley bugger and white marabou muddler but I just didn't have the confidence in them and wound up back with the old stand by goldie. This time I got smart and worked my down the shoreline just a little and took advantage of a break in the brush line so I could let my back cast drift off a bit and not worry. A couple of casts in my new spot and I get another nice slow but firm take and am on but only briefly as this bass does its best to rise to the sky in the brisk early season water and shake the fly free. Success. He's gone. By now the sun is just over the tips of the tall white pines and I know my time is running out...But I really need one more to call it a day. Then reality. Cell phone rings. When you coming home?? Soon, very soon. Pocket the phone and work out the line...zipp.....zipp....zipppppp. This new Shark Skin line is REALLY nice but noisy. Great temperment in the cold water. Fantasic distance and pretty much memory free. Worth ponying up for I must say and didn't think I would be convinced it could be worth a c note. Well a couple of casts later and I am hooked into what will be my last of the cookie cutter largemouths just as the sun drops behind the tips of the pines. All of a sudden It really feels as if it is getting windier but I know its just the wind chill now being magnified by the lack of sun. So I reel up and start back to the trail satisfied with my first successful largemouth outing of the new season. Along the way I spy something floating along the edge of the pond bobbying among some kids pails and shovels was fine plug. Score! I take the plug and some trash and call it a day.

Thanks Alec!!! My mouth is watering just thinking about it
I will be sure and take the camera next visit as it is a beautiful spot that surely deserves sharing. Gillbuster had the weather been nicer this week I would have been there sooner for sure but it wasn't a great week for after work fishing. I can assure you I was thinking about it all week

Got a great start to the season .Was doing some trout fishing with a friend on the cape .We were fishing streamers .He a "Casual Dress" & I a "Mr. Perch" .Well he was fighting a 20 inch rainbow ,figured I should get my line out of the way .That bow was going wild ! Started to strip in my fly fast & then wham ! Turned out to be a smallmouth around 4 1/2 to 5 Lbs. My friend took a nice pic of him on my cell phone ,but I cant figure out how to get the picture onto my computer ! nice fish on an eight foot 6wt. Later, mike...bamboo |

Also made this short video clip which the real highlight is the bird in the background . This is done while trying to land the fish and video. Also my first attempt
uploading and sharing video online.
Catching Yellow Perch video was in quicktime format before uploading. Not sure if you need that to replay or not.

Nice story and a great looking pond, Jeff! I'll throw in a side of Fries to go with that Taco!
I'm green, I've spent so much time riggign the new boat, that I have yet to brave the cold for a bass fishign expidition. I've been out all of once and that was to do sea trials on the boat. Only anaged to troll up one of those Trou#. ( Don't worry , I won't swear with the T word here )
Hopeing to get out this weekend for my first bass |
