Folks,
We need to start getting suggestions of where our annual September STS fly fishing and Eat-a-thon will be. I am going to try to bring a new member. Everyone is welcome, as in the past, this outing is assured to a great time, fine cuisine, good fellowship and lots of laughter. Wee Hooker's Trophy is on the line & up for grab. Need to open your Award winning recipe books and start planning. Last year we had some fine tackle/canoe to display and show off. I am sure some folks have added to their unique collection to brag about. Hope all are having a fun filled summer with your families, looking forward to seeing a good STS attendance & everyone on the water in September...
Let's get some ideas...

Master Guide

How about a canoe float down the Quaboag River? It's a slow ride and has some dynamite bass fishing, as well as a possibility of pike. We could put in at the pond (Quaboag Pond, aka North Point) and take out in West Brookfield down the river.

This is what the pond looks like in the Winter. I took this photo a few years ago. Anyway Quaboag is a great pond for iceboating I know that much. It has a good sized parking lot and is pretty easy to get to off the MA Pike Sturbridge exit for routes 20 & 84. If you take New Boston road off Route 20 just opposite the state police barracks it will get you to the launch a little sooner than going around up to rt 9 and down. Not sure where I will be that weekend maybe on the cape

Let's not just settle on Quaboag River because it was the first suggestion. It just happens to be an idea I had, but I want to hear more ideas and we can pick the best/most interesting option. Besides, remember that I'm the guy who suggested Brooks Pond and Flannagan Pond, and we all remember how successful those trips were...

I actually thought of Quaboag River while poking around on a map looking at possibilities in So Central Mass, which always seems like there are a lot of good options.

Any ponds any of you guys have been dying to try?

I would to try the Quabbin some day, but must have a boat... Suppose to be an outstandng fishery, You can rent 15' boats with 9.9 motors for $30.00, split 2 ways = $15.00. Problem it is a distance to get there and boat rental is first come first serve... Lots and Lots of water. and shore line to explore. I plan to spin fish it this year with my nephew (he doesn't fly fish) in July...

Second place I want to fish is Middle/Mystic Pond in Barnstable. I fished it a couple of years ago, didn't catch (early March) much, but it is a beautiful body of water. I think it is much better during the summer, read some good bass reports. Shouldn't have much boat traffic, hard to launch a boat, car tops and canoe type boats are perfect

Look at my post on the Bass thread, Jurassic Pond, (i. e. Mystic Pond) Middle Pond is very poor, had no hits in 2 hours fishing what so ever, Mystic Pond is another story, like night and day...anybody interested in fishing it next week for another pre-fishing assessment for a future STS outing... this pond has dinasour size fish in it... only fished half of the pond... hard winds and tuff conditions...not alot of fish yesterday but every fish was fantastic quality (see pics)

Mystic/Middle "Jarassic Park" Pond ...Cape Cod

Alec & I gave Mystic/Middle Pond another try for a pre-fish assessment for September's outing. We didn't do well on this trip as I did the previous Saturday, but the breakfast, the company, the beautiful Cape Cod ponds and lunch was outstanding.... I had a chance to ride in the famous Duckbucket, and it is a truly fantastic watercraft.

We zipped across the 2 ponds with ease and saw some beautiful water. This place is out of the way and doesn't get much pressure like other Cape Cod Ponds

A view of Jurassic Park Island, the amount of live bait fish jumping out of the water around this island was incredible. There were schools of jumping bait fish by the thousands everywhere. Numerous of abondoned fish beds along the shore line could be seen. We were saw a fair mumber of bass but weren't interested in any thing we threw at them, they must have been feeding on bait fish

Alec demonstrates "fly fishing poetry in motion", with the double haul and shooting the line...Those glass fenwicks can cast some line

We did manage to catch some beautiful Pumkinseeds, they were also large and colorful .We think this may the place for our STS September outing...the Smallmouth, Perch & LM bass should be hot again and plan on fishing it again to see more fishable areas. This is a great looking body of water for canoes, car tops or belly boats. These 2 ponds are just too good looking to not produce some real nice fish...Alec, thanks for sharing the Duckbucket and another great day to be on the water...

Sorry, been away and buisy ( part of which was BANGING smallmouth and pickeral for a week in downeast maine ;-)

Unless there is any objection, the Sept. gathering will be held the second Sat in Sept. at 8:00 am at Middle/Mystic Lake. Will post directions later. I intend to bring the Cup home this year! Tight lines! Alec

Well Alec, I don't know about that.... I am digging out my Grandmother's cookbook, and whipping up an ole famliy special, I am bringing a camp stove for a beach cookout...
