A long, long time ago - probably around 1970 to 1972 - I first tied this fly to fool the calico bass of the South Shore ponds where I fished. A dear friend, Denham Fisher, reminded me of this pattern in a posting on the Fiberglass Fly Rodders forum. Well I decided to tie one up to share. There's nothing particularly special about the fly, other than it's from my childhood. Also it was one of the first flies I'd ever seen that used rabbit fur for the tail and beard. This fly managed a brief local following, hanging on for the half-dozen or so years that I tied flies for sale. It even found a place in the Tight Lines tackle shop in West Bridgewater for a while. I do remember that it did the job on those crappie!

Hey JeffSod, speakin' of Tightlines, I'm one of the few from that era that still lives in these parts, the same house I grew up in, in fact. Are you from Bridgewater, or anyplace close?

I scaled it down a bit. The New England standard streamer in the 1970's was on a 6xl hook. Here I've used a 3xl Mustad 96720 in size 6. Dubbed white rabbit body, white rabbit beard and tail, and a coyote wing. I think I like it even better this way.

Hey Denham Fisher, I grew up in Brockton and remember going to tightlines with my Dad. It was the only outdoor store around then. I live in Bridgewater now. I'll have to try tieing up some of those Crappie killers,they should work good at the Nip.

Mike, I have lived in Bridgewater for all fifty of my years. You fish the Nip? I fish it too. I prefer to wade, but will occasionally put my canoe or my "poor man's bass boat" in. Maybe I'll see you there this spring. My son used to own the bait & tackle shop next to Burger King on Broad St. Ever been?

Denham, sure, I went in your son's tackle shop a few times. There use to be a few of those small places around, people selling bait out of their cellars, just don't see places like that anymore. I can remember going with my Dad to a few places in Brockton getting a bunch of chubs before going fishing down Edaville railroad, those are fond memories, I loved seeing the big tanks of chubs and shiners ! I usually wade the Nip too, sometimes I'll use my float tube, but it's so shallow most places, you don't really need it. We should make a plan to meet up at the Nip some Sat. morning. Hope to see you this spring,

Even Tiger Muskie | #14 | ||
|
They've put tiger muskie in as recently as 1999 to 2001, I believe. I've never caught one. I know people that have, but they are few and far between. There is a heavy population of yellow perch, and a healthy number of white perch. Excellent prey for the big bass and picks. God, I can't wait till ice out!

about 3-4 years ago I was fishing the Nip, in May I think it was, and caught 8 species of fish: bluegill, yellow perch, white perch, crappie, largemouth bass, pickerel, redfin shiner, and I couldn't believe it but a herring !!! Something was making a racket right up on the bank in just inches of water, splashing all around, so of course I had to take a cast. I hooked something and fought it in and sure enough it was a herring !!! I'd never seen one before, but the guy I was fishing with knew what it was. That was one crazy day. All fish were caught wading to the right of the boat ramp. There's so many yellow perch in there, they are stunted. Tons of 6" or smaller perch everywhere. I wish they would continue the tiger muskie stocking, the lake needs some alpha predators.

I'm going to be in Boston on tax day - April 15. Depending on weather maybe there's a chance at some fishing. I'll let you know as the time gets closer.

The herring run up the Taunton river and can be found all the way up into the ponds of Bridgewater, West Bridgewater, East Bridgewater and beyond. The LMB in many of these ponds know it too. You will find the bigger LMB lying in wait near the entry point of these ponds ready to pounce on the herring as they enter the pond weary from their journey. I never knew this until a few years ago when I witnessed it for myself. Thats when I started chucking my herring patterns tied for Stripers in the local ponds near these entry points. Oh and obviously the herring will bit a fly too. I find they are more likely to hit the fly post spawn. Probably very hungry at this point, |
