In Fall River, MA around 1955, there were three sporting good stores, only one carried fly tying materials (all on one turn style). The only deer body hair was blue and orange. So my first bugs were tied with blue and orange. I painted the belly of the bugs with white model airplane paint. When I met Al Brewster and showed my bugs he laughed. He told me never paint deer hair. I didn't have access to different colors. That season I caught a four pound Largemouth. I realized the bass was interested in eating and wasn't interested in color it didn't matter.

The yellow bug with bucktail legs was a favorite of my friend, Gerry Klein who won 1st place in Field and Stream for bass on the fly. He used impali (calf) tail instead of bucktail. The only color I never used was black - because I didn't believe in it.
