I purchased an Eagle claw featherlight 6'6" 5wt. It was $25 shipped and thought I had to try it. It
was on the porch when I arrived home last night so I grabbed my reel and headed straight to my neighborhood pond. The pond is only 2 blocks from my house so I
actually had about an hour before it was too dark. The fishing was successful. In fact I caught the biggest LMB I have ever witnessed in that pond. I did
have trouble casting though. I think there were several things going on. First, it was the first time I had ever casted the new rod, and I'm no champion
at casting my other rod. Second, I was using small balsa poppers, which I think take some getting used to. Third, the fish were going crazy and I think I had
a little "fish fever." After I took a moment and composed my self, I was doing better.
My question is this: I was using a lampson velocity reel. I have read about balancing rod and reel & wondered if another reel would make a large
difference in the casting. I certainly think I need more practice with the rod as well. Any thought are appreciated.

Fish fever has been the number one cause of reverting back to the time you had never fished a fly rod - IMHO you did the right thing by stopping and collecting
you thoughts. Many times going back to practicing the basics will get you back in action. IMHO unless you really notice the reel as you are casting, I
don't think it's a problem. You can see how you rod balances by putting the reel on, stringing up the rod and using your index finger to see where on
the cork handle your rod balances. If it won't balance on the cork handle, you may want to try another reel. The Eagle Claw rods have slow actions and take
some getting used to. Try some lawn casting and then you're set for the big nasties. Good luck & hope that helps.

I am excited to put in the practice. I'm off visiting family near Mineral wells Texas this weekend. They have a couple ponds on the ranch that are rumored to harbor some monsters. |

slow your backstroke on the cast, slower than when you fish with graphite.

Also check Walmart as they were closing these out not that long ago. I went with the 7 foot model.

Is this your first fiberglass fly rod? Fiberglass is slower than graphite and can take a little getting use to, also if your poppers have a lot of wind drag
(legs, feathers,etc ) this will also slow your cast even more. There are some articles on balancing a fly on the website "fiberglassflyrodders".

Leader might have been an issue, too. Tossing a heavier fly you might have trouble turning the fly over with a light/limber leader -- especially if it was
your first experience w/glass after using graphite. Once you fail to turn the fly over, it's tough to recover. Taking a little time to get the rythm of a
slow action rod is the key, though. Practice practice practice...

definitly slower-you might also consider using DT5 and WF6. Play with it, roll cast it, experiment with the timing. You'll grow to like the rod.
