Thanks a million for the fast reply and the pictures. Now I understand what you mean by "bending back" & by "tie at 90 degrees." Your pictures are not clear but that's o.k. I get the message loud and clear. Few people would have responded so soon nor would they have had pictures to demonstrate. You are one of a kind!!!

I'll look in my catalogs for "Boyds Bodies." Just in case: what do you find is your best source for this product?

Hi Clyde,

The green froggy and the mouse left side were purchased on ebay, both are cork bodies, flocked with felt, legs for the frog are raft fur wrapped around thick mono then painted to stiffen them, up to the joint. The ones I tie use cork bodies painted, the same style of heavy mono as the base to the knee for the legs, but thick real fur, I paint and seal the legs to the knee leaving the forlegs unfinished.

Wayne, at least out here I fish the Goldies close to the shoreline where there are lots of rotting floatsome and lots of cover for the crappie, and food. Im along the old riverbed in the lake so quite a current crossing my position. I cast downstream, floating line, short rod so only a 7ft combination tappered leader/tippet, let the goldie sink for about a slow 10 count then with my finger on the line sort of give it a little twitch, just enough to give it some movement and make the foil catch the light and the fishes eye. Usually a crappie takes it on the second or third twitch. Im going to head up river and try them on the trout as soon as summer is over and the turist are gone. We have about 20 plus miles of river upstream from the lake thats open year round for trout.

John, Thanks again for the pictures and pattern for the Goldies. As I looked through my favorite web sites I found the www.warmwarterflytyer.com had a similar fly, called the "Flashabou Streamer." They said it was a take off of "Feather-Crafts" FC Salt Shaker. Look it up and tell me what you think?? Close?? Similar??

Second, after looking through all of my Fly Tying Catalogs I could not find "Bill's Bodi-braid," nor could I find it on any of the web-sites with fly materials. Could you just use basic "Flashabou?" or something similar? What is your source for "Bill's Bodi-braid"? $:\$

Sorry for so many questions, but I know that sometimes the exact material -- [not a substitute] makes all the difference in the effectiveness of the pattern.

Here are some websites. It was origianally designed/used for Saltwater flies, I took a fly tying class from Dick Empie 2 years ago who designed the Goldie. He fished with the late Bill Bodi and was very impressed at the verstility of it. Dick had several photo albums of different species of fish he caught with the Goldie, I personally witnessed it's catchabilty first hand. Out of 45 years of Dick's trout and warm water fishing, this fly catches more fish than anything he ever used before, it is in the presentation and that action of the mylar thread material. It catches the heck out of the fish along the Missisppi River. I can't wait to try it out in Alaska in 2 weeks. If you PM me your address, I will gladly tie you up a bunch and you can try them out...while your waiting to get the material

Thanks for the rapid reply and the great sites. You are such a great asset, no wonder Bass Pond has you as their adm.

Those first two are great sites. However, you can only purchase from them if you are a business, or Com. Tyer. etc. On the Last site: [Saltwater] I can purchase the materials at retail.

I have considered becoming a "Commerical Tyer" and forming a business thus, being able to purchase "Wholesale." What is your "take" on this? How much $$$ would you need to begin, because you need to buy in bulk -- probably $1,000 to $3,000 purchase is minimum from wholesalers, [right, or close??]. I know it would take a lot of time, and dedication. Are "contracts" signed between C.T. and com. like Up. etc.??

John: How much do I owe you for goldies?? And where do I send it???

Thanks, I had Bears Den in my favorites but deleted it a while back, Why? Can't remember now.

But, thanks, it has the exact products I'm seeking. You guys are so helpful.

Thanks for your support and interest in the Goldies Goldies are in the mail...On The Bass Pond left side main page there is a Community Chest, thats where you may make contribution there...Let us know how the goldies do in your local area... let them sink 10-15 seconds before you stripping it with floating line. The crappie, bass and gills should have a field day with them. I have better luck with darker colors in sunny days and cloudy days the goldie does the trick...have fun and tight lines

A thought, and I know your carrying the load for this site, but your goldies are a big hit up here, I haven't broken into my Christmas present pair but frankly if your willing to make some more, I think im in need of at least one more set, as well your froggies.
Why don't you guys make the annual fly auction occure say on a quarterly basis? seems like a fantastic way to generate funds for the site, heck your keeping it functioning with your great goldies alone and I suspect your frogs will prove just as popular, they are great out west here on the local bass populations.

Great to hear that having success with the goldies in CA, I know some of the folks have had great success, including myself with the "Cat whiskers". After I get back from visiting my son in Alaska I will put it out to the group. I can't wait to see how the variety of Goldies do in Alaska in the Talkeetna River area. I will gladly make up as many set of Goldies as anyone needs.

I like the "quarterly fly auction" idea.

Let's make it happen!!

I got into a fly tying mood several years ago and have an excess of flies, bug, etc. [probably close to 250-30

. Most are taken from a pattern -- but after tying a dozen or two according to the pattern,-- I begin to experiment: change the color, material, size, add eyes, beads, etc. Some look good, some --well, you know -- but most still catch fish.

I would be willing to tie a few dozen flies [at my own expense], and provide pictures, for the "Quarterly Fly Auction." If we could get a dozen tiers to tie a dozen {or two} for the auction -- we could easily have 100 -- 200 flies --up to 20+ dozen sets of flies to auction off.

We need some one to suggest specific fly patterns or types {Clouser type, Deciever type flies} -- then have individual tiers to "Take" a pattern {type} and tie up a dozen or two or more for the auction. This way you would have a dozen or more different patterns offered in the auction!!!

John??? do you volunteer for this job?? :rollin

Ordered some flys from a nice guy in Utah who had a friend post some pictures in the fiberglassflyrodders forum, great looking all purpose beatles with long rubber legs. Anyway gonna send you one each of the three patterns when they arrive.

Well I know one guy that would kind of go crazy about selecting fly patterns, our own Cornmus, Joe would be great for the job, so would John aka Gillbuster, maybe the guys could put their heads together and come up with not just flys but some neat bugs and poppers too, a wild selection.

Hi Gillbuster, haven't caught you online much lately, hope all is well. Was wondering if your gonna have an annual fly swap and auction this year? Our weather has moved into winter and nows the time I can make flys and fly rods. Sense its the Bass Pond I would love to see something specific to Bass and panfish for this year if your gonna have an auction and swap.

Great John, let me know whey your ready and which type of fly you have in mind for this year. Winter is the only time I have to tie flys but before spring sets in I will most likely have tied 8 or 9 varities and between a dozen and two dozen of each. I try to get all my needs out of the way during the 30 odd days of bad weather when I cant go fishing. Looking foreward to this years swap and auction.
