Hello all,

I would like to get a little more serious about pursuing bass, and would probably use a 7wt fiberglass rod for the majority of this fishing. I also have other
glass and graphite in 5wt, 6wt and 8wt that might be used as well.

Anyway, for bass fishing with the 7wt Fenwick in various conditions (tossing some good sized bugs with quick casts for fairly short distance, but also making
lots of medium to longer casts with medium sized bugs), what is your favorite line? I've...

Armand I tried the Lefty Kreh series line and found it to be ok but definetely preferred the Sci Angler Headstart over it for about the same money. The
Headstart is a Mastery line and seemed smoother and able to cast better and further. The Kreh line seemed to have a softer coating and the line doesn't
shoot as far. But some may like that in a line and the presentation maybe better if you are targeting trout.

Well, I picked up a new Rio Mainstream DT7F line for $13 including shipping, which I didn't think was too bad for a $35 retail line. Rio's website
actually shows the DT line has a slightly shorter front taper than the WF line in the Mainstream series, which reportedly has bit shorter taper in general than
standard lines for "ease of casting/loading". So I'm hoping/thinking this might turn out to be a decent all-around 7wt line that will handle some
bass fishing fairly well.

At some point I'd definitely like to have bass/pike taper lines for my 7wt and 8wt, but maybe for the next year I'll see how this Mainstream DT line
works.

Thanks for the replies!

In my younger days I would stand up in the canoe and fly cast. I found a regular tapered line WF would allow me to lift line from the water's edge, let the
line slide on the back cast and shoot line on the forward cast.

In some areas that are tight such as pockets of close lily pads, a long cast is not necessary, this is where bug tapers come in handy. If you over line your
rod, you can actually make a back cast with the belly of the line inside your rod tip, as you make your forward cast, the short heavy belly section will shoot
out.

I really thought in this age in time I thought prices of fly lines would come down, but they seem to be steady and rising. My advice to the guy with young kids
and the need to save money. Some times if you approach the right people you can get fly lines that are seconds. Most of the time it's the coloring that is
screwed up - not the taper of the line. That's your assignment look for the right price and enjoy fly...

The Headstart lines are WF. DT's are not as heavily weighted towards the front taper as a WF and that makes them eaiser for begginer casters but also helps
throwing big bass type bugs and flies too. I personally haven't used at DT other than lawn casting so can't add input on the functionality.

Jeff: Are your Headstart lines WF or DT? Do you think it matters much?

I was thinking the Headstart and MainStream lines might be good, and it sounds like the Headstart lines are working well for you.

I have several Sci Angler headstard lines in 6, 7 &8wts and they do the job nicely. Also have a Sci Angler Bass Bugging line which is a fine bugging line
but more money. These lines don't have much finesse when it comes to delicate presentation and that would be the only reason to consider other lines.

My first serious bass bugging rod around 1960. Also used this in salt water. Shakespeare Professional (I really wanted the President series) 8 1/2 ft for 8 wgt
line. This was a glass rod. I was blessed with Cortland 333 Moon glo and AirCel WF-9-F standard taper. Used with short leader nothing over 7 ft, straight mono
nothing smaller than 12 lb test. I used cork and hair bugs. To this day - one of my favorite serious bass bugging systems. Basically I over lined by one
weight. Ideal for making short and long shooting casts, up to 90 feet. Not necessary in fresh but great for catching striped bass and bluefish on the surface.
By the way from a fifteen foot canoe. I like surface strikes.

Rio MainStream, but have heard that while the Bass Tapers are great for turning over big bugs at fairly close range, that they are not very good at the longer
casts at all. Am I better off with a standard DT or WF line for all around bass fishing? I know that this depends upon whether a person fishes mostly big, air
resistant bugs....but I'm talking about just a good all-around bass line.

I just picked...
