European fly tiers created beautiful salmon flies out of exotic feathers imported from Africa, Asia, and other far-flung regions. American tiers learned about these patterns from European anglers and through books such as Ephemera’s The Book of the Salmon (1850), William Blacker’s The Art of Fly Making (1855), Francis Francis’s A Book on Angling (1867), and George M. Kelson’s The Salmon Fly (1895). Beginning in about the 1870s, American tiers began creating a new set of flies based on European salmon patterns. Their new creations were designed to catch North American trout,...

Was shopping a Cape Cod tackle shop a couple seasons back and looking for some flies to use on largemouth bass. Really was looking for bass bugs at the time but this small synthetic streamer meant for saltwater caught my eye. I have since used it exstensively for largemouths and many other types of freshwater fish. Had great luck with it fishing today with Gilbuster and promised him I would post a photo so he could have something for reference to tie some up this week. I will be doing the same. The neutral or slow sink attributes of this fly really seems to get the fish's attention. When you stop stripping and the fly starts to sink is usually when they nail it. Had a pile of fish hit it today including one very healthy LMB we will never really know how big it was but it sure put a hell of a bend in rod and made one hell of a toilet flush wake!

I sat down and tied up a fresh batch of herring/perch streamer flies. I usually tie these up as young of the year herring imatations but the bass have been on yellow perch recently and decided to due a batch with more yellow to imitate them.

These are real easy ties. I use Gamakatsu G-lock hooks in size 1/0, Bills Bodi braid EZ Body tubing (medium), Devlin Blend flash (from www.bearsden.com ) for the wing and dark olive or black Angel Hair flash for the back of the fly/fish. Also, added in the tubing below the hook is a micro 3mm fly rattle which does double duty as an attractor and it weights the keel so the fly rides properly. Normally I glue 5.0 3D molded eyes on just behind the hook eye but I am out right now. These can really add to the realism of the fly.

I got two bugs but found them too heavy to use with my 8 1/2 ft Shakespeare Glass rod. Being a fanatic bug tyer I decided to make a lighter version using deer hair. I will be tying this bug thursday evening. This bug has made my day for fresh and salt water bass fishing on top. I going to brag a little. Using this bug and my 8 1/2 ft rod with (one size heavier line) WF-9-F I had the most fun - making 90 - 100 ft casts.
