Question for you fly swatters to stimulate some discussion....
Looked at some high end new Xi3 Sage Fly rods ( $700.00) this weekend (they are sweet, but spending big $$$, whew!!!) ... instead of taking the big $$$ dive
on a new rod, I decided and purchased some good quality 9wt Rio fly line ($75.00)... What a HUGE difference this made on the casting on my St. Croix fly rod
8wt... I got to thinking... with all this new technology coming out to the fly fishing industry at warp speed, is it more the improved fly line technology
that impacts the balance and castabilty or is it the newer Fly rod technolgy? I had previously used mid $$ range Cortland and Scientific Angler fly line and
it casted okay, I usually overline with 9wt, but it wasn't smooth as some of my other fly rods... All rods have a certain level of backbone (law of
Physics) that will load the line and cast it, but is the fly line weight and quality that...

Hello all,
I would like to get a little more serious about pursuing bass, and would probably use a 7wt fiberglass rod for the majority of this fishing. I also have other
glass and graphite in 5wt, 6wt and 8wt that might be used as well.

Anyway, for bass fishing with the 7wt Fenwick in various conditions (tossing some good sized bugs with quick casts for fairly short distance, but also making
lots of medium to longer casts with medium sized bugs), what is your favorite line? I've thought about a less expensive Bass Taper, like a Cortland Pro or
Rio MainStream, but have heard that while the Bass Tapers are great for turning over big bugs at fairly close range, that they are not very good at the longer
casts at all. Am I better off with a standard DT or WF line for all around bass fishing? I know that this depends upon whether a person fishes mostly big, air
resistant bugs....but I'm talking about just a good all-around bass line.

I just picked...

Bass feed when they are hungry and/or when instinct dictates. It is well known that bass and sunfish coexist most of the time in a
peaceful, blissful state. Periodically, bass get hungry and "announce" that it is now dinner time. That event begins with a rocking motion of the
body followed by a flaring of the gills and culminates with ingestion of the nearest neighbor that will fit into the mouth.

The gill-flaring action reminds me of a healthy yawn. Sunfish that have been rubbing shoulders with bass for most
of the day will immediately scream and run for cover when the gill-flaring behavior is seen.

Bass also feed instinctively. A passing object may trigger a reflex action which results in feeding behavior. So
those great days when fish were caught behind every rock probably coincided with an extended feeding period. Catching a fish here...

I really like this pattern and it's about time that I start tying them.

Recently, as in the past year or so, I have decided I am done with buying flies, unless they are show flies or I might buy one to copy, if I don't know the
pattern etc.

I lost my last store bought Kaufmann Stonefly and now tying up my own, but after following the recipes online, I am noticing that my stoneflies are no where
near as fat or has a lot of density like the others.

Any tips from you veteran tyers out there, on how to build up the girth of the stonfly without closing down the gap? I tried using thick dubbing, but then the
ribbing just dissappears in it. I then tried using lead wire, and triple wrapping lead wire into a taper (this method worked best so far I guess, but I am just
worried about the gap.)

Any help on this woudl be greatly appreciated. Also... does anyone else use rubber legs on their big stones? Any other substitues that I could use or is...

Hey you glass guys, my x boss came into work with a pair of custom built Fenwick flyrods that are of unknown line weight. Both built in the 80's (or so he
remembers), bout brown fiberglass with spiggot ferules. The 9' er has a very fat butt but it's very light weight for a glass rod. It is two piece,
slow action and has the code 1082 on a decal. I'm thinking it "feels" like and 8 wt but the code makes no sence to me. THe other is 8' , 2 pc
and has the same slow action and light feel and has no code at all. Wonderign if anybody has any info on what these rods could be.
(p.s. Yes, i will test cast tehm with various lines but I'm trying to get a head start. I don't know squat about glass.)

Thanks in advance!
