Anyone ever fly fish or spin fish for Pike

I met some guys who fish Lake Champlain for pike and also catch smallmouth bass. Has anyone done this and where do you fish. You know I am a surface fly and spin fisher. I love top water fishing. Also would like to fish smallmouths in Maine.

I have been fishing hard. I caught my first five pound bass on July 9, 1959 = it weighed 5 pounds, 1 3/4oz taken on a Jitterbug. I have been trying over fifty years for a ten pounder. Maybe this year. I have been fishing Delaney WMA Pond for three weeks at least three days a week, I have be catching and missing fish. Some of the fish chase the lure or bug, or some ambush through the pads. I naturally assumed they were Largemouth. I have come to the conclusion that these were not bass they were Pickeral. These fish are so large I want to say Pike but I don't believe there are any in the pond. It's heavily weeded, lily pads and tree stumps.

I can say from the strikes and playing large Pickeral they actually scare me. Normally I would say fifteen pound Bluefish scare me they are crazy

Three Days of Fishing on the dark side

Fished three days straight (four hours each) at Delaney Wildlife Management Area located Harvard Road, Stow, MA. Probably got over fifty pickeral 13 bass. The place is weed infestive, with stumps and lily pads. I did catch a few on the fly rod. I fished on the dark side 5 1/2 ft Ugly stik, 20 lb power pro line with 5/8 oz Jitterbug. 20 pound line to muscle fish out of pads and weeds. I would rather use the fly rod but conditions not the best....

On Steroid Pond - Chasing Gator Pickerel

And overstuffed yellow Perch! Had the pleasure to connect with Gillbuster and fish for some gator Pickerel and fat yellow perch today. Gillbuster and I have had some fantastic outings together and today we added another fine one to the memory bank. A huge thanks goes out to our host the owner of the property and the boat which made this great outing possible. I think the pictures speak for themselves. The fishing was about as good as it gets in November. Some of these pickerel were absolut gators who dominated the fights and basically flipped us off as they tor away every time we tried to coax them to the boat.

Just got a last minute invite to do a 4 day trip to Lake Saranac ,NY to do some wilderness camping and pike/smallie fishing. Have never targeted pike specificly with a fly rod. I'm pumped but wish I had more time to get some flies togeather. :-( Stand buy. Hopefully some nice fish pics to get posted next Sunday!

Pickerel Buggin

I had made plans to take the recently shared Orvis marked Phillipson 8ft 8wt out to do a little Largemouth Bass buggin this afternoon but mother nature had other plans. The body of water I was going to hit up is pretty large and the launch is on the downwind end of the SW wind fetch (our normal summer wind) and with a front approaching gusts were just too strong to mess around with in a canoe.

So plan b was initiated and I wound up on a closer and more protected waterway and even that was interesting with the strong gusts. We haven't had much in the way of rain lately and this little river I wound up on is really showing it. But it is very fertile and there was plenty of bait around so it was worth the effort even if I didn't pickup any bass.

Hyrdrilla has taken over a good portion of the slow water now providing lots of cover but leaving little weed free water to fish. There are two chutes that are tunnels above and below the stretch I fished and they...

HAd some pictures in other post.. they seemed to disappear...here they are again...pickerel fishin is awesome..fish over a pound give up great fights..got some all up to 3 pounds..got one a few years ago possibly bigger but it was pre boga and self portrait technique...most on deep driftin lakes with streamers with droppers ... utilizing kayak and drift socks...awesome..all caught in NJ! Awesome for pickerel fishin...so many lakes..so little time...

It is 53 outside and spring is on its way. The next 3-4 weeks is one of the best times of the year to catch BIG Pickerel here in eastern Mass. So who wants to go fishing???
